Getting What You Want
by Jason Cruise
God has a history of giving us exactly what we want. It started in the garden. Adam and Eve wanted freedom. God gave it to them. Even though they had Samuel, the people of Israel wanted "their own king" and God gave them Saul. The prodigal son wanted to go to town and do his own thing, and Daddy let him have just that. You can find story after story in the Scriptures which testify to God letting people have their own way.
Often when I come to a cross-roads in my journey of faith, a quiet and sober truth soaks into my heart that while I may say I want to obey the Lord, the truth is ... I can do what I want. I can choose to do it my way, and nobody is going to stop me. The problem with actually following through on what I want to do is that I cannot see the view from 30,000 feet.
I have limited perspective that is mixed thoroughly with limited understanding.
A bad combination for success no doubt! Perhaps that is what Paul was getting at when he stated that he is a slave to righteousness. Paul was a freedman bound to serve the heart of God. Only when you and I find such freedom in such bondage will we be able to overcome ourselves.
